Most likely just a sprain. The pop is normal for sprains with a lot of swelling.

It should start getting pretty discolored in the next couple of days.

Stick your foot in a bucket full of ice water for 20 minutes a time a couple of times a day and you will be good to go in no time.

You are taking medical advice from wildcat who is probably as far from a doctor as can be. My advice, go see a doctor.

    Couple of things.

    1) get it checked. Get it X-Rayed to make sure. I broke my ankle for the 1st time (done it 3 times), playing hoops. Kept playing on it. It was the size of a softball, finally the next day, I went got it looked at and it was broken.

    2) Also, allow yourself the proper amount of time to heal. I cut the cast of 2 weeks early (dumbest thing ever), I wake up every morning and we have wood floors and my wife knows I am wake by when she hears my ankle crack. I can not stress the importance of allowing it to heal properly.

Yes, I paid $5 (in 1993) to get into rec center I wasn't a member at. I have done stupid crap like that before. I tore ligaments in my knee and played for another week or so on it. Finally the Dr. said, if you don't stop you are going to need surgery and will be out for more than 12 weeks you are going to be out now.

I did a lot stupid things when I was younger. I now pay the prices for these injuries. Fractured my tailbone, didn't stay in bed as long as should have and can't sit still for more than an hour now (in a plane or at the movies).

Just dumb crap. I always tell anyone now, allow your injuries to fully heal before getting back to it.

I did the same thing years ago in 3rd qtr[at that time, lol] i tightened up the shoe & finished the game then after game i took shoe off & it got to be almost as big as a basketball, i then went to the e-room & found out i had broke a bone in the ankle & then had to wear a walking cast for 6 weeks, i thought i had sprained it until they xrayed it,gl

Do yourself a favor and get two of these. I will not go to the court without them on. They are very good.

Agree with the xray...it's possible you could have avulsed a small piece of your fibula.

Remember the pneumonic: RICE - Rest, Ice Q 2 hr X 20 min, Compression with an ace wrap, Elevation above your heart.

Also take your advil or aleve with food for inflammation.

Assuming it's one of the three ligaments that stabalize the lateral ankle, allow it adquate time to heal before resuming strenuous activity.

Physical therapy may be helpful, as well...

it depends, i have twisted, rolled, sprained almost had every injury possible to my ankle, and sometimes it would make that popping noise. real loud and high pitched. but after a few days it was right back to normal and other times it was a bad sprain and i was off it for about 3 weeks

keep it iced and wait a day or so before going to the Docs because unless its broken they wont do much for you

its probably a sprain but get it checked out if it hurts for a couple weeks or more cause it could be a torn ligament. I had a grade III sprain of the UCL (tommy john surgery) and when it happened it made a loud popping noise.
