Padres, RHP Nick Pivetta agree to 4-year, $55M deal.

The San Diego Padres filled a clear need in their starting rotation Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a four-year, $55 million contract with veteran right-hander Nick Pivetta, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Pivetta's deal, still pending the completion of a physical exam, includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons and is heavily backloaded. The contract will pay him a $3 million signing bonus and only a $1 million salary in 2025, then calls for salaries of $19 million, $14 million and $18 million from 2026 to 2028, sources told Passan.
Big Plus for Pads.

What does he have left? Best years are begind him...

Justin Turner, Chicago Cubs agree on 1-year, $6M deal.

MESA, Ariz. -- The Chicago Cubs are in agreement with free agent corner infielder Justin Turner on a 1-year, $6 million contract, sources tell ESPN. The deal is pending a physical.
Turner, 40, split time between Toronto and Seattle last season compiling a .354 OBP in 139 games. He also hit 11 home runs while batting .259. Overall, Tuner has a .821 OPS in 16 big league seasons.
The Cubs have been searching for a backup for Michael Busch at first base as well as someone who can fill in at third. Turner checks those boxes but probably won't be asked to play third base very often as he made only six appearances there last season.
He does provide some insurance at the hot corner as the team plans on starting rookie Matt Shaw there. Shaw has been slowed early in camp by an oblique issue.
Turner is joining his seventh organization after many productive years with the Dodgers where he was a two-time All-Star and finished in the top-15 voting for the MVP award three times.
He has also played in 86 postseason games -- undoubtedly an attractive quality for the Cubs, who are hoping to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Also Tuesday, the Cubs announced that they have signed right-handed pitcher Chris Flexen to a minor league deal. Flexen, 30, made 30 starts for the White Sox last season.

COMING SOON: The Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) presented by T-Mobile.
will be used during Spring Training games for the first time ever. ABS has been tested in the minor leagues since 2021, and 2025 will be the first test with the Major League players. About 60% of 2025 Spring Training games will be played using the ABS Challenge system. The ABS system uses a set of cameras around the field to track the pitch location and allows players on the field to challenge an umpire’s ball-strike call. ABS Challenge Rules: - Each team starts the game with two challenges. - Only the batter, the pitcher, or the catcher can challenge an umpire’s call. - A challenge must be made immediately after the umpire’s call without assistance from the dugout or other players. - A scoreboard graphic will show the location of the pitch and the result of the challenge. - Successful challenges are retained – you only lose your challenge if the umpire’s call is confirmed.
